How to advertise your small business on Kenyan social media pages
You don't need a marketing team or a big budget to get your business in front of new customers. Pages with loyal followings will post your ad for a fixed price. The hard part is picking the right page.
Sponsored posts or paid social ads?
Facebook and Instagram's own ads let you target people and start small, but they take some learning. A sponsored post puts your ad in front of people who already follow and trust a page, and you know the full cost up front. Many small businesses use both. A sponsored post is an easy place to start.
Pick the platform your customers use
- Instagram suits things that look good: fashion, beauty, food, events.
- Facebook reaches a broad audience and works well for local services and shops.
- Telegram channels are often built around a specific interest, such as deals, jobs or news, and readers are used to tapping links.
If you aren't sure, ask your last ten customers where they spend time online.
How to check a page before you pay
- Look at its last ten ordinary posts. Do real people comment, and is it about the topic?
- Compare reactions with followers. A huge following with almost no reactions is a warning sign.
- Check it's relevant. A page your customers would actually follow beats a bigger one they wouldn't.
- Look at other ads on the page. Regular advertisers suggest ads there work.
- Read reviews from other advertisers, if the page has them.
Prepare your ad
You'll need a clear picture or short video, a caption, and somewhere for people to go. Keep to one offer, and tell people exactly what to do next. See how to write a sponsored post that gets customers.
Start small, then repeat what works
Book one post before committing to more, and note what you got: clicks, WhatsApp messages and sales. Ask new customers how they heard about you, because not everyone taps a link.
On Vumisha, you book in a few steps: choose a time, upload your ad and pay. It's checked, then posts itself, and your report shows the reach, views, reactions and link clicks. When you've found what works, a campaign books several pages with one ad and one payment.
