Advertising on Kenyan Telegram channels and Facebook pages: a guide for businesses
Popular Facebook pages, Instagram accounts and Telegram channels reach people that ads on the big platforms can miss: readers who trust the page they follow. Buying a sponsored post from one is simple, but the results vary a lot from page to page. This is how to choose well and know what you got.
Choose the audience, not the follower count
Start with who you want to reach, then find pages those people read. A page about jobs, a page about football and a page about farming can have the same number of followers and almost no readers in common.
Follower counts are easy to inflate. Prefer pages that show what their posts actually reach. On Vumisha's Discover (vumisha.com/discover) you can filter pages by platform, topic, town, budget and audience size, and pages show their average reach per post from Facebook's and Telegram's own numbers, how many ads they've run, how quickly they review and ratings from other advertisers.
Check the basics before you pay
Before booking any page, on any platform:
- Look at their recent posts. Would your customers read them? Do people comment, or only scroll past?
- Check how many ads they already run. A feed full of ads gets ignored.
- Ask how long the post stays up.
- Find out what happens if the ad doesn't run.
On Vumisha the package spells out the placements and how long the post stays up. If a page declines your ad, doesn't review it in time, or the post fails, the money becomes credit for another booking instead of being lost.
Write an ad that fits the page
A sponsored post works best when it reads like something the page's followers would want to see anyway.
- Lead with what the reader gets: a price, an offer, a date.
- Keep one clear action, with one link.
- Use a picture or a short video that makes sense without sound.
- Check the caption fits: Telegram allows far less text under a picture than Facebook does.
Every ad carries a label such as "#ad" or "Sponsored". That isn't a weakness: readers trust pages that are open about ads, and the page owner chooses the label.
Pay safely
Pay through a method that leaves a record, and preferably one where the money isn't released until the ad has run. On Vumisha you pay at booking with M-Pesa (a prompt on your phone, then your PIN), card or the other methods shown, and your slot is held while you pay. The page owner is paid only after the post has stayed up for the time the package promises.
Measure what you got
Ask for numbers, not screenshots. Every link in an ad booked on Vumisha becomes a tracked link, and after the ad is up you get a report with reach, views, reactions and link clicks. Compare pages by cost per click or per thousand people reached, and book again where it worked.
To run the same ad on several pages at once, with one payment, use a campaign (vumisha.com/campaign).
